Please read these instructions and the renewal application form carefully as major changes in the Private Detective Licensing Act were made by the 1998 Kansas Legislature.

This renewal application must be completed in its entirety to renew your private detective license to engage in detective business:

• as an employee of a licensed private detective agency.
  
• as an officer, director, partner, or associate of a licensed private detective agency.
  
  
• as an independent private detective.
  

The renewal application must be accompanied by:

• Two (2) color photographs, 1 1/4 inches wide by 1 1/4 inches long (passport size) which were taken within 30 days before the renewal application is submitted. Polaroid photographs are not acceptable.
  
• The applicable 2 year renewal fee:
  
  
  
  • For an employee of a licensed private detective agency......$175
    
  • For an officer, director, partner or associate of a licensed private detective agency......$100
    
  • For an independent private detective......$175
  
  

  Make money order, cashiers check or personal check payable to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
  

• Except for an employee of a licensed private detective agency, verification of a corporate surety bond in the amount of $100,000; a certificate of insurance showing general liability insurance which provides coverage in the amount of $100,000 for bodily injury or property damage caused by negligence and errors or omissions; or verification of $100,000 cash deposit with the State Treasurer.
  Because your private detective license will be renewed for 2 years, the Attorney General no longer requires that your bond or insurance cover the entire licensure period.

Firearm Permit Renewal: If you wish to renew your firearm permit, you must also submit a complete Firearm Permit Renewal Application form, a Certification of Training and the 2 year renewal fee of $50.

Due to the time required for processing renewal applications, please submit your completed renewal application materials and fees as soon as possible in order to have your renewed private detective license in hand by the first of the year. In any event, renewal application materials and fees must be received by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation no later than December 31. Since the Private Detective Licensing Act does not provide for a renewal 'grace period,' your private detective license will expire if you do not submit a completed renewal application in time. In that event you would need to submit and re-qualify for an initial private detective license.
